Chakam carries a meaning that English translations thin out when they settle on 'wise.' The Hebrew root points not to abstract intelligence or philosophical knowledge, but to a demonstrated competence, a skill that shows up in real work. The craftsmen who built the tabernacle were chakam. The women who wove the priestly garments were chakam. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God and with chakam, so that he could cut stone and work gold and construct a dwelling place for the living God. This is wisdom with calluses on its hands.
From there, the word broadens into the moral and relational sphere. The chakam person in Proverbs is not the one who has read the most scrolls. They are the one whose life actually works, whose relationships hold, whose speech builds rather than tears, whose response to correction is gratitude rather than defensiveness.
