Tevunah carries the sense of insight that comes from careful discernment, the kind of understanding that separates and distinguishes between things. The root binah gives us the verb bin, which means to discern or to perceive by separating. Tevunah is not raw information. It is the capacity to look at two things side by side and know which is which, to perceive structure where others see only noise.
In the Old Testament, tevunah appears most heavily in wisdom literature, and it consistently describes a quality that God either gives or possesses supremely. When Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God in Exodus 31, tevunah is listed among his Spirit-given capacities, meaning that skilled craftsmanship was considered a form of God-granted discernment, not merely technical training. James 1 promises that God gives generously to those who ask, and tevunah tells us what we are asking for: not data, but sight.
